NHRC Extols ANA as Human Rights Defender

NHRC EXTOLS ANA AS HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER

Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) was at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on a familiarization visit.

Speaking at the August occasion the National President commended the Commission for standing fast and firm for justice and the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria, especially since creative writers have always been at the forefront of fighting for just causes and the rights of both the individual and the society. A sacrifice people like Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Ken Saro Wiwa, Femi Osofisan, Odia Ofeimun and others have championed for long, he said. Reminding the Commission that the largest creative writers' body in Nigeria and the Commission are like brothers in the same area of interest, but for long each concerned with the same objectives but not working together. He reiterated that the time has come to join forces and enlighten creative writers on their rights, promoting and protecting same, as well as fighting against the infringement of the rights of others.

Responding, the Executive Secretary of the Commission Mr. Tony Ojukwu Esq, thanked the Association for finding it worthy to come to the Commission with the intention to partner with the commission which he said was timely. He drummed support to the leadership of Camillus Ukah and referred to the writers' body as "The Defender of Justice and Human Rights" from the beginning of its inception, with her members pursuing and making sacrifices to the envy of all. He promised to create a desk office on human rights for the benefit of the Association and her members. He presented the National President with souvenir of the Commission and took photographs with members of his directors and staff with the delegations of ANA.
