ANA CONGRATULATES AFRICA'S OLDEST WRITER, HIS HIGHNESS CHRISTIAN OTOBOTEKERE ON HIS 97TH BIRTHDAY.

Dr. Camillus Chima Ukah, President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has congratulated Africa's oldest writer, His Highness Christian Otobotekere as he attains the age of 97. According to Dr. Camillus, the poet is what he called a human being and living ancestor! 

This was contained in a statement issued by the National PRO (North) Umar Yogiza Jr in Abuja on Saturday. 

According to the release, ANA President said, “Nigeria, Africa and the world at large is proud to have a dedicated luminous talent such as His Highness Christian Otobotekere, who mastered the art of poetry and has contributed and still contributing to the development and growth of Literature in Africa.  

Dr. Camillus in Banquet Hall of Bayelsa State Government House, Yenahoa, thanks the Bayelsa State Government for celebrating the poet while alive and prayed for his clean health and long life.

ANA NIGER LAUNCHES 2022 ANA/YUSUF ALI LITERARY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN/ANA 1,000 BOOKS, A BOOK A CHILD CAMPAIGN

The Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, Niger State Chapter on 21st July 2022 in Minna, launched the Association's Literary Awareness and Reading Campaign co-sponsored by Yusuf Ali (SAN), an Ilorin-based Legal Luminary/Disbursement of 1000 books, ANA'S a book a child nationwide campaign.

The 2022 ANA/Yusuf Ali literary campaign/ANA'S A Book A Child Nationwide Campaign in Niger state focuses on selected Secondary Schools, it's divided into three zones, this is for the Minna zone, The two other zones will follow immediately.

Receiving ANA Niger delegation led by the ANA Vice President Hajiya Farida Muhammed is the representative of Niger State Head of Service, Dr. Idris Mohammed Legbo, the Niger State head of Service, through Dr. Idris Mohammed, called on the Federal Government to immediately replicate and expand ANA/Yusuf Ali Literary Awareness Campaign & A Book A Child Nationwide Campaign, it's a revolution, he said, against the decaying reading culture in the country.

Representative of Hajiya Hannatu Jibrin Salihu, the Honourable Commissioner of Education, Niger State, lamented the continued dropping of reading culture in Nigerian Schools, due to basic poor book orientation.

He commended ANA Niger State Chapter for taking the Association's reading awareness campaign/book distribution to the three zones in the State, saying the gesture would enhance the unhindered diminishing love for books and the reading culture across the State.

On her part, ANA Vice President, Hajiya Farida Muhammed, while presenting the books to the selected schools, encouraged the State to immediately replicate in any way the ANA/Yusuf Ali Literary Awareness Campaign & ANA'S A Book A Child Campaign/Book Distribution, She called on the State not to wait on the Federal Government when it comes to improving the standard of education and reading culture in the State, Hajiya Farida Muhammed tasked the schools to take the reading and writing exercise seriously and to encourage the students in documenting their plight in a story or poetry form. 

Earlier on, the State Chairman of ANA, Dr. Ndagi Abdullahi had explained that the ANA 1000 books –A Book A Child Campaign & the Literary Awareness and Reading Campaign supported by Mr. Yusuf Ali SAN, and National leadership of ANA was aimed at quickening the creativity of the future movers. He said, promoting literary works and reading culture in secondary schools should be everybody's business, both government and individuals. Dr. Ndagi urged the schools collecting the books to take the exercise seriously, he said, reading and writing is the only bridge into the safe future.

Other ANA officials and dignitaries includes, Alhaji Suleiman Shu'aibu, the Vice President, Kagara Old Students association. ANA Niger, Vice Chairman, Secretary, PRO other officials and the representative of the schools.

ANA NASARAWA DISTRIBUTES 1000 BOOKS TO SCHOOLS, DURING 2022 ANA/YUSUF ALI READING AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN LAFIA.

The Chairman of the occasion, Mallam Sani Sally, has argued that poor reading culture is the root of so many problems the Nigeria is facing today, and would be responsible for major setbacks the country may face in the future if it's not tackle quickly. He stated this in Lafia at Government Secondary School, Lafia, venue of the 2022 ANA/Yusuf Ali Reading Awareness Campaign. The Chairman of the occasion, Mall Sani Sally further tasks the state stakeholders to do more in the promotion of reading, just like Yusuf Ali SAN and many others are already doing in other states.

Mr. JOY Anzaku the guest speaker of the event commended ANA for the distributing 1,000 books to the State chapters across the country and Bar. Yusuf Ali SAN, for his untiring efforts towards improving reading culture in Nigeria. He further submitted that if we have few more of Yusuf Ali SAN, donating three million (3,000,000) Naira or less each yearly, we'll have a better Nigerian in no time.  Nigeria of brain drain would be the thing of the past in a very short time.

In her remarks, State Chairman, Dr. Chika, called on State Ministry of Education to recommend more quality texts, especially the books written by the hardworking members of ANA Nasarawa and further called on the management and schools proprietors/proprietress in Nasarawa State to use recommended books by the State Ministry to ensure quality standard of teaching and learning in their schools. 

She stressed further that only quality texts would maintain quality of education that will have direct impact on the society. Dr. Chika said, that the reading awareness campaign is her number priority when she was elected as chairman of ANA Nasarawa, and she would want to take the reading campaigns awareness to all the Senatorial Zones of Nasarawa State. 

Earlier in their welcome address, the staff of Government Secondary School Lafia, appreciated the Association for the honour done them by choosing their school to take off the reading awareness campaign, the school who always speaks in pronoun said, with crowds like this! It was an opportunity for the schools to showcase the talents of their pupils and students in arts. 

Meanwhile, the principal Mr. Abdul Alebura Abisabo, thanked the ANA Nasarawa for the book donated to the schools and Bar. Yusuf Ali SAN, for creating reading awareness yearly and the opportunity for students to participate in the event.

The event which witnessed the giants of ANA Nasarawa featured talk by Danasabe Osori, ANA Nasarawa vice Chairman, Lois Azigi, Secretary of the Association, Chapter officials like Mss Lorex, etc., Abdulrasheed Ladan, Corps Members, invited guests and various representative of schools.

Applications for the Second edition of Chinua Achebe Prize for Nigerian Fiction are now open, this is a Literature Prize awarded to Nigerian Novelists at home and abroad who publish in English. The prize has been launched by the Anambra State Government in July 2021 to mark the forty years anniversary of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) which was founded in 1981 by Professor Chinua Achebe of blessed Memory. The focus on fiction reflects the efforts of the Nigerian writer of the contemporary era to change the narratives and intensify the search for a better world. The second edition will awarded during the ANA International Convention in November 2022.

Prize

There is a cash prize of N1,000,000 for the winning entry 


Eligibility

—Open to Nigerian writers at home and abroad

—Open to only books published between 2021 and 2022

—Unpublished work are not eligible for the Chinua Achebe Prize

—Only novels are eligible

—Only one novel per author will be considered in any one year

—Six copies of the work are required

The ANA Review, published yearly by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) is a journal that seeks to assess the pulse of contemporary Nigerian and African literary writing as well as critical discourse.All submissions for the 2022 edition of ANA Review should be directed to the Association’s Editorial Board headed by the General Secretary. Submissions are expected in the following genres—

1] Poetry—Not more than six poems per submission.

2] Prose—Short stories or fiction excerpts must be under 4,000 words.

3] Essays—Academic and literary essays on subjects related to literature are welcome; must be under 5,000 words.

GENERAL INSTRUCTION

The works that are to be submitted in all categories should be original and not recast(s) of already existing works. All submissions are subjected to copyright laws of Nigeria as authors should note that they retain full responsibility for any sort of infringement. Works entered into for ANA prizes are expected to be of the highest language and literary quality.

ANA/ Maria Ajima Prize for Literary Criticism (published works only) Length: Not more than 15 pages of A4 paper size following format of academic essays.

      1. Type double spaced using MS Word. 

        Use Times New Roman Type face 12 point 

        font size.

      2. The essay, if published in a journal, 

        newspaper, books or as electronic text 

        on-line, must be within the valid dates 

        indicated on this call for submissions.

      3. Referencing style is either the latest 

        MLA or APA style.

      4. Five hard copies as loose sheets or as a 

        bound monograph are to be submitted to 

        ANA, plus a soft copy sent by email to 

        info.ananigeria@yahoo.com and

       5. Maikortserga@gmail.com The essay 

        should not be a generalized survey but 

        should rather be focused on specific texts 

        (in any of the genres) of selected authors 

        at a time.

      6. The essay should state where the texts 

        or performance analysed can be accessed 

        or located and where it (essay) has been 

        published.

      7. All entries in this category should be 

       accompanied by a letter affirming the 

       originality of the essay and authorial 

       authenticity.


       8. In addition, all other rules covering ANA 

       competitions are applicable.

 

Copyright: The copyright to every winning entry is to be held by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Maria Ajima Trust, and the author of the work. The winning entry will be published in subsequent ANA Reviews.

Entries must be accompanied by photocopies of Birth Certificate/Declaration of Age and any other evidence of the entrant as a school-going person.

 


DEADLINE

 

Deadline for the receipt of ALL entries is 28th May, 2022 (there will be no extension of this deadline). A shortlist will be announced in September, 2021. Winners of the prizes will be announced by the judges at the Awards Dinner during the International Annual Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors in November, 2022.

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) under the leadership of Dr. Camillus Chima Ukah has mourned the passage of Jerome Martyns Ajayi, a vibrant member of ANA Kaduna Chapter who died through a motor accident in Kaduna, Kaduna State.

In a statement, ANA PRO (North) Umar Yogiza Jr. sent to newsmen on Friday, described the youthful Ajayi's whose life was cut-short is a devastating loss not only to ANA or Kaduna State, but to the pen fraternity worldwide.

According to the Statement, “Jerome Martyns Ajayi left at a time ANA and the country needs his contribution, but 'Those we love never truly leave us.' And there are some things that death can never alter. The grief literary community is going through is the price for having a wonderful person, like you, Jerome, in our lives".

ANA Commiserate with the Jerome family as well as friends and ANA Members in Kaduna state as we supplicate to God to give us all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss”.

Dr. Camillus Chima Ukah finally prayed to Almighty God to grant Jerome Martyns Ajayi eternal rest and implores that– God gives and God takes, mindless of our schedules.

Jerome Martyns Ajayi until his Death, worked with the NIPOST, and was at the time of his death a law student at the law school in Abuja.
