Julien Benda, the French philosopher and
author writes about intellectuals (writers inclusive) as men whose duty is to defend all eternal and impartial values such as justice and reason. Benda, regrettably, faults the intellectuals, positing that:
“The men whose function is to defend all eternal and impartial values, like justice and reason, and who I call the intellectuals, have betrayed this function in the interest of expediency…”
One can easily uphold Benda’s position in the light of Ahmed Maiwada’s consistent outbursts and vituperative attacks on some respected ANA elders. For quite some time now, the Association of Nigerian Authors under the able leadership of Camillus Ukah has watched in silence as Maiwada is getting increasingly vituperative in his flare-ups.
We would like everyone to know that our silence is not, a sign of weakness but a civilized decision to focus on the case in court as people do in civilized climes. It is, however, shocking that Maiwada, who had recently made desperate attempts by using his boys to call respected ANA members and put them on speaker as he tried to use unprintable comments and threats to forcefully extract their support, is now taking his desperation a step further to insult others, claiming they are sabotaging his activities.
Since Maiwada has been expelled from the Association of Nigerian Authors, his temper has sharpened, his snobbery increased and his misanthropy deepened. How can someone who obviously wants to persuade others put his trust in pouring invectives instead of bringing up the right arguments as intellectuals do? What makes Ahmed Maiwada believe that he is not fake when even the court case he instituted to prove him is yet to tell us that he is genuine?
If he is convinced that he had adequate evidence to institute a libel case against any ANA elder, he doesn’t need to stand on the roof-tops and announce it, he should do the needful. The number of ANA members he has threatened with similar court cases is uncountable now. He has recently gone reckless in his characteristic hubris to make open veiled threats on his Facebook wall directed at particular ANA elders who do not support the dissention and disaffection he has brought into the Association because of his vaulting ambition. We have taken security and administrative notice of his threats and will deal with them apprppriately.
Let Ahmed Maiwada be warned, he does not have the monopoly of rascality and that we all know the way to the courts.
